The BMW E24 635CSi was Mat's first classic car project — a 1989 model that had been passed between multiple owners who all failed to fix its mysterious engine problems. Mat eventually solved the issue by replacing the ECU, which finally brought the 3.5L M30 inline-six back to life.
The real challenge was the bodywork. The car was riddled with rust — chassis rails eaten through and held together only by undercoating, sills destroyed, rear quarters rotted, floor pan compromised, and botched fibreglass repairs covering terrible paintwork underneath. The restoration required cutting away damaged sections and welding new metal, with plans for a manual transmission swap from an E12 5 Series to replace the original 4-speed automatic.
