Mat took on a totalled 2019 BMW M5 Competition — the F90 super-saloon with 625 hp from its 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 and ZF 8-speed automatic. The car had severe front-end crash damage including a hole through the strut tower and destroyed crash structure.
The rebuild proved shockingly expensive. Multiple deployed airbags required a complete dashboard replacement. Headlights cost £800 each, and the bonnet hinge mounts with their pedestrian safety mechanisms added further costs. The engine had to come out for inspection, and damaged radiators required temporary coolant line rigging. Despite the costs potentially exceeding a used M5 with similar mileage, Mat persisted through careful research and creative problem-solving.
