McLaren declared the wrecked 720S unrepairable after the carbon fibre monocoque tub was damaged in the crash. Mat sourced a secondhand carbon tub for £52,000 and embarked on one of his most technically ambitious projects — systematically transferring every component from the wreck to the new tub.
The rebuild required reverse-engineering how McLaren originally assembled the 720S — engine, suspension, interior, wiring looms, fuel lines, tanks and sub-frames all had to be meticulously removed and refitted. The heater box and intricate wiring routing proved particularly challenging. Richard Hammond made a guest appearance during the build. After completion, additional work was needed to make the car legal for UK roads.
