Mat bought a crashed 2021 Range Rover Sport SVR from salvage and challenged himself to rebuild it in 7 days — for a planned road trip to the Sahara Desert. The car appeared to have minimal damage externally but concealed broken cooling fan, damaged intake, bent roof and blown airbag systems.
The project hit a critical setback on the final day when the engine failed with a hole in the block. Three engine replacements followed — the first was water-damaged, the second had a bottom-end bearing fault despite working until 1am on the reassembly. Eventually, the original damaged engine was welded back together by a specialist and successfully reinstalled. Mat then drove the rebuilt SVR through Spain and Morocco to the Sahara Desert, where it tackled sand dunes and off-road circuits despite briefly getting beached.
